L’esprit d’escalier or InshAllah (but in either case, you don’t know what to say)
On Civil Disobedience vol. 9
On Civil Disobedience is a monthly pamphlet series featuring writers from a range of professional backgrounds who contribute essays addressing the title topic. The series will recall historical precedents set by Thoreau, Gandhi, King, Arendt and others while considering the pamphlet’s important role in American revolutionary history. The series filters civic responsibility through the combined awareness of histories and disciplines, asking how citizenship and resistance intersect within the pledge of democratic ideals. This ninth issue by Rashayla Marie Brown, is a wide-ranging collection of autobiographical essays covering the artist's nomadic life from Chicago to Dubai. The title refers to two phenomena: a French term for the predicament of thinking of the perfect reply too late, in the time it takes to get down the stairs; an Arabic term commonly spoken by Muslims everyday about the unknowable future controlled by unseen forces.
