New Modernism for a New Millennium: Works by Contemporary Asian Artists from the Logan Collection
Featuring more than forty works from the renowned collection of Vicki and Kent Logan, New Modernism for a New Millennium explores a critical moment of transformation for two Asian nations as reflected in the visual arts of the last decade of the twentieth century. The twenty-one artists represented here amalgamate East and West and old and new, harness political propaganda as artistic fodder, and explore new notions of global identity. From the provocative anime- and manga-inspired sculptures of Takashi Murakami, to the Cynical Realist paintings of Song Yonghong and Wang Jinsong, to the photographic self-portraits of Yasumasa Morimura that place the artist in the context of Western iconography, New Modernism for a New Millennium presents contemporary Japanese and Chinese artists navigating an ever-shifting world of turmoil and change (SFMoMA).
