Turn Illness into a Weapon, Talking Book Edition

Turn Illness into a Weapon, Talking Book Edition
Turn Illness into a Weapon (Talking Book Edition), Organized by Josephine Sales, is a collective reading and unauthorized edition of Turn Illness into a Weapon by the Socialist Patients’ Collective (SPK). SPK is a patients’ collective founded in Heidelberg, West Germany, in February 1970.
Prefaced by Jean-Paul Sartre, this anthology features multiple entries that resist the production of illness under capitalism and radically reimagine doctor-patient relationships and society’s obligations to disabled citizens.
This edition features each of the text’s forty-four chapters read aloud by artists, organizers, poets, staff, and community members of Wendy’s Subway. Most readers are disabled, chronically ill, MAD, and/or neurodivergent, providing a shared space for reflection and engagement with the text.
This audio zine is the first in a series of Talking Books featuring disability-related titles. The series, initiated by the artist Josephine Sales, will serve Wendy’s Subway b/Blind and low-vision, disabled, chronically ill, MAD, and/or community members, staff, and the general public.
The full text of Turn Illness into a Weapon by the Socialist Patients’ Collective (SPK), translated by K.D. (2013), is here.
After this Talking Book was produced in 2020, the Socialist Patients' Collective—which continues to exist as the Socialist Patients' Collective/Patients' Front, SPK/PF(H)—requested to publish the following note regarding the unauthorized translation used as the basis for this project:
“Instead of breaking with all things medical in favor of a new reality to be created, in which there is room for everyone, this patients-hostile translation of a K.D. remains completely tied to the mainstream of medical language and the medical prerogative of interpretation of illness. It distorts the content of the SPK and the revolutionary concept of illness and thus attempts to defuse illness as a weapon of change and recognition.”
An authorized version of the book, in a revised and expanded edition, can be read in full on the SPK website.
